Hats have always been, and will continue to be one of the most effective fashion accessories for men. Just a brief glance at the many styles from around world speaks volume for the creativity and pride cultures take in their hats. They come in all shapes, colors, forms, and sizes, and fit almost any occasion if pulled off with a tinge of class and sophistication.
The Magic of Unisex Hats
Believe it or not there is a vast amount of unisex hats that anyone and everyone can wear year round. While in the west it’s all caps and cowboy hats, those with a bit more taste and variety on top of their head (as well as within in) should try and branch out a bit. Comfort bubbles are meant to be broken.
Want an example of a unisex hat that rocks? Try an Indiana Jones outdoor hat. These things can get dirty and still look amazing. Travel hats are pretty similar, but because of their typically earthy and baige tones they go with almost any light to full-on casual ensemble. Guess what, fishing hats can also be really cool when going to the beach, or being outdoors period. Just remove the lures and stuff first.
Hats for Formal Occasions
Typically made with fine materials, formal men’s hats are actually rather impressive. Expect lots of dark colors for the most part. There’s Derby hats, Homburgs, Madhatter style, top hats, gamblers, and lower Boston style stuff. They all look great, and can easily cross the line into informal wear.
Take good care of them though, these aren’t cheap and once stained, it’s hard to remove those. Look for felt, soft wool, and a vintage feel that will stand out in almost any crowd. Let the clothes match and work with the hat, not against it. Don’t try to finish off a drab set up with a quality hat.
Hats for Informal Occasions
These are fun, and should be approached with a sense of humor. At the end of the day informality is about comfort and convenience, with a humble fashion statement. Straw hats are for special men, but if they work (look best on tanner skin guys, sorry) they can be anything from brand new to ancient and still look sweet.
Baseball style caps will always be in, along with golf caps, and more alternative brands from skateboard and snowboard companies. In fact, a nice pair of shoes, pressed slacks or jeans, a nice jacket with cufflinks, and undershirt can completely offset the informality of these caps and make them totally work.
For parties and thing, or that “I really don’t care” look, go with a loud and obnoxious yet super comfortable looking hunter cap. Why not? Go for the ones with the long sides hanging down that sport fluffy wool underneath.
Beanies will always be cool as well, and the newer models with short bills look great on a fair amount of facial types and builds. Furthermore, they come in any color.
Speak with Hats
Rather than just having that one old grimy and smelly hat, have an assortment for many different occasions, and let people know you have more than one style to offer. It’s a formidable fashion asset to have.
