For most men, college is a magical time filled with hangovers, coffee induced comas, and the occasionally empathic significant other. We could wear what we wanted, express our individuality in completely absurd and childish ways with abandon, and prance around like the world was our footstool.
However, once a guy reaches his thirties, it’s time to ditch those old beat up blue jeans, and tight t-shirts that are so faded and distressed the stitching is falling out with each rise cycle. Once it’s time to grow up and mature the style a bit, here are a few ways to step things up a notch and join the big boys club.
Accessories that Count!
First of all realize that when it comes to fashion accessories for men, going the cheapest route typically isn’t the best way to go. If a guy is outdoorsy, ok, even then a decent sports watch beats the $12.99 knock off any day. Sometimes a little helpful motivation is in order, and that’s where cufflinks come in.
Once a nicely designed and unique pair is bought, the next step is getting things to wear them with. This style-based hunting and gathering leads to a better fashion sense. Obviously they’ll need to compliment the watch choice, and typically come off better on enhanced business suits. Semi-casual formal wear is always a good thing, so get plenty of it, and don’t be afraid to spend a few extra bucks.
Become a Trend Blender
Mix a bit of the old school with the new school; a bit of the traditional conservative with highlights of modern flash. Put on that nice jacket with a pinstripe vest underneath and a pressed v-neck t and finish it off with a distressed pair of (new) blue jeans and polished black boots.
The point is to make some effort in presenting oneself to the world with a bit of fashion sense, rather than throwing on anything that doesn’t score too high on the stink-o-meter. In fact, throw all those clothes away, and start anew. College is over, and it rocked so keep that one awesome hoody, but other than that let it all go.
Stay Mindful of Age
Happy post-twenties and pre-forties birthday! From here on out, unless you’re blessed with great skin and age incredibly well, most people will consider you full-adult status, and wearing college clothes comes off as trying to seem younger. It’s super tacky, doesn’t almost anyone, and grabs attention in all the wrong ways.
Growing up these days is great, because by the time a guy in his early thirties reaches his early forties, they will be the new early thirties! Keep it classy, put some effort in, and while it isn’t wise to break the bank of heavy designer (walking-billboard) type stuff, moving beyond thrift stores and knock-off stores is a wise move.
